BOURNE — Bourne Public Schools is pleased to share that the Bournedale Elementary School second-graders hosted a successful Career Fair on Friday.
On Friday, March 29, more than 100 Bourne Public Schools students, families, community members, BPS administration, School Committee members and local municipal representatives attended the Bournedale Elementary School Career Fair.
A total of 115 second-grade students partnered with Bourne High School student interns to choose a career field to learn more about and represent at the fair. Students and their BHS interns hosted 44 career tables. Career areas that students chose included: public safety, education, communication, business, life science, design, philanthropy, athletic training, real estate, healthcare and sports marketing/management.
At the fair, visitors were given a list of career-specific questions prepared by each student to prompt a conversation. Second-graders and their BHS intern put together slideshow presentations and provided visitors with handouts and materials to take home about the career path of their choice.
“Today’s career fair showcased an array of professions, providing our students with invaluable insights into potential career paths,” said Bournedale Principal Liz Carpenito. “Events like these empower our students with the tools and resources needed to make informed decisions about their future, while allowing them to explore their passions and aspirations.”
Today’s event was created following an event held last December where BHS interns hosted a Career Hop for Bourndale’s second-grade students. During the Career Hop, the high school interns provided information about their various internships to the second-graders to help them learn and understand the different careers and professions they were working in. After the Career Hop’s success, the second-grade Student Council expressed interest in holding today’s career fair as a way for their peers to learn more about their potential future career paths and to engage with community members.
The Career Fair correlates with the second-grade reading unit on careers, offering students a creative way to practice ELA standards in speaking, listening, reading, writing and research. The event provided a hands-on learning experience for students, deepening their interest and expanding their communication skills.
Additionally, while planning the career fair and discussing the keys to future success, Bournedale students had the idea to create their own “Vision of a Graduate” for their school. Students identified several skills and attributes they would need to have gained in order to position themselves for success before moving on from Bournedale Elementary School. With feedback from students, staff and caregivers, Bournedale’s “Vision of a Graduate” was created. Bournedale’s second-graders plan to follow the “Vision of a Graduate” guidelines to organize events like the career fair and others in the future.
