NORFOLK — The Norfolk Fire and Police Departments responded to a fire on Wednesday morning.
On Wednesday, March 6, at about 10:20 a.m., Norfolk Police and Fire received reports of smoke alarms sounding at the Norfolk Housing Authority, 33 Rockwood Road.
Upon arrival, Norfolk Police officers observed light smoke in a hallway of the building. Fire crews arrived on scene and quickly stretched a hose line into a unit on the second floor to extinguish the fire. The fire, which was contained to one unit, was declared under control and crews began overhaul operations within 10 minutes of arriving.
Residents had safely evacuated the building before the arrival of first responders. No injuries were reported. One resident was displaced and is being assisted by family and friends.
The Franklin, Millis, Wrentham, Bellingham and Plainville Fire Departments responded to the scene to provide mutual aid. Foxborough Fire provided station coverage.
Norfolk Fire would like to thank Norfolk Police for their assistance at the scene and for helping to ensure residents’ safe evacuation, as well as Police Chief Timothy Heinz, who coordinated with facilities staff.
The fire is believed to be unintentional and caused by smoking materials. The Norfolk Fire Department would like to remind residents to use a heavy ashtray when smoking and to fully extinguish cigarettes and other smoking materials.
The fire remains under investigation by the Norfolk Fire Department and the State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit attached to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
