WHITMAN — Chief Timothy Clancy reports that the Whitman Fire Department participated in an animal rescue operation this morning.

On Sunday, Feb. 11 at 11:19 a.m., Whitman Fire responded to a home on Winter St. for a report of a large animal down in a barn.

Upon arrival, crews discovered a 1,000-pound elderly female horse that could not stand up on her own. It is unclear how the horse got on the ground.

Firefighters requested assistance from the Plymouth County Technical Rescue Team who brought specialized equipment, including a harness, to the scene.

First responders attached the harness to the horse and were able to use a front-end loader to successfully lift the horse back onto her feet.

The horse was evaluated by a veterinarian on scene and is expected to have no lasting effects from the ordeal.

Personnel from the Whitman Department of Public Works also responded to the scene, which was cleared at approximately 2 p.m.
