WHITMAN — Police Chief Timothy Hanlon and Fire Chief Timothy Clancy report that the Whitman Police and Fire Departments responded to a potential hazmat incident yesterday evening.
On Thursday, Feb. 23, at approximately 4:30 p.m., Whitman Police and Fire responded to 355 South Ave. for a report of a suspicious and potentially hazardous substance found inside an apartment.
Out of an abundance of caution, Whitman Police and Fire declared a Tier 1 hazmat situation, the lowest level on a scale of five. The Tier 1 hazmat declaration led the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services District 1 Hazmat Response Team to respond as well.
Hazmat technicians inspected the residence and found no indications of dangerous levels of hazardous materials.
The apartment was deemed safe and first responders cleared the scene at approximately 7:15 p.m.
