Newport Police Department Responds to Report of Suspicious Backpack Found at Community College of Vermont

NEWPORT, Vermont — Chief Travis Bingham reports that the Newport Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious item in town this afternoon, which was ultimately determined to be unfounded. 

On Wednesday, Aug. 3 at approximately 1:40 p.m., Newport Police received a report of a suspicious backpack left at Community College of Vermont (CCV), at 100 Main St. in Newport City, with a “device” inside. 

CCV is located inside of the Emory Hebard State Office Building, which houses several other businesses. Newport Police were aware of several recent “swatting” calls in New Hampshire and Vermont of similar style. 

Out of an abundance of caution, the Emory Hebard State Office Building was evacuated and a safety perimeter was established. Personnel from the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department, Vermont State Police, Newport City Fire Department and Newport Ambulance Service responded to assist. 

It was quickly determined the call was a hoax and there was no danger to anyone. 

People were allowed to return to the Emory Hebard State Office Building by 2:07 p.m. 

The incident remains under investigation. 

“We would like to thank all those affected for their understanding and cooperation during this investigation,” Chief Bingham said. “We would also like to recognize all of the agencies that responded for their immediate assistance to bring this to an end safely and swiftly.”
