ANDOVER – Chief Michael Mansfield reports that Andover Fire Rescue extinguished a large brush fire last night.

On Tuesday July 12, at approximately 7 p.m., Andover Fire Rescue received reports of a large brush fire at 296 High Plain Road, along high tension power lines.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed heavy smoke, as a fire was extending into a heavily wooded area. Crews established a water supply and declared a working fire, drawing approximately 10 off-duty and on-call Andover Fire personnel and the State Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) to the scene.

The fire burned an area about one mile long and 300 yards wide, and was brought under control by approximately 10 p.m.

Andover Fire Rescue was back on scene this morning, Wednesday July 13, at approximately 8:15 a.m. for mop-up and overhaul.

Members of the Lawrence, Tewksbury and Wilmington Fire Departments provided station coverage.

There were no reported injuries and Andover Fire Rescue and DCR will remain on scene for the majority of the day to continue wetting down and ensuring there are no flare ups.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Andover Fire Rescue, Andover Police and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

“I encourage anyone who is out in the woods this summer to be cognizant of fire hazards and conditions,” said Chief Mansfield. “We are experiencing moderate drought conditions which are making the land extremely dry this time of year, that exacerbates these situations.”
