DRACUT — Chief Peter Bartlett and the Dracut Police Department are pleased to share that K-9 Officer Zach Coleman helped to raise $4,500 in Market Basket gift cards for families in need this month.
On Saturday, Dec. 20, while eating breakfast, Officer Coleman was approached by a man with a $20 Market Basket gift card who asked him to donate it to a family in need.
Inspired by this kind gesture, Officer Coleman posted the interaction on Facebook, adding that he would match the anonymous man’s contribution. Other users took to the social networking site as well, and within one day the community raised $4,500 to benefit families in need.
“I want to thank the gentleman who unknowingly started this all with a simple act of kindness. As a community, we turned $20 into thousands,” said Officer Coleman. “It is truly heartwarming to see so many come together and donate and I am so appreciative of all my family, friends, neighbors and colleagues for their kindness and generosity.”
From Dec. 22 to 23, Officer Coleman, with the help of Sgt. Jim Quealy, delivered Market Basket gift cards to 18 local families in need. The
Dracut Public Schools assisted Officer Coleman in finding families in need of donations.
The Dracut Police Department would like to thank all 130 people who donated for their generous contributions.
