North Reading Police Cruiser Involved in Crash

NORTH READING — Chief Michael P. Murphy reports that a North Reading Police Officer driving a marked cruiser was involved in a motor vehicle crash on Thursday afternoon.

At 2:15 p.m., an officer was driving northbound on Main Street and was stopped signaling a left turn into the National Tile parking lot. A southbound driver, in the left lane, stopped and waved the officer on, but as the officer proceeded to take the left turn, a PT Cruiser driving in the right lane of the four-lane roadway also known as Rt. 28 struck the cruiser. The officer was not injured, and the driver of the PT Cruiser, a woman from Tewksbury, was transported to an area hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

The officer was ruled at fault in the crash, as he should have checked both lanes of oncoming traffic before proceeding to take a left turn. He will be cited by the North Reading Police Department, according to Chief Murphy. The incident remains under investigation.

The cruiser sustained passenger side front and rear door damage, and the PT Cruiser sustained front-end damage.
