Amesbury Police Department Searching for Armed Man Who May Be Seeking to Harm Himself

AMESBURY — Interim Chief William Scholtz reports that the Amesbury Police Department, with mutual aid assistance from members of the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) and the Massachusetts State Police, is currently searching a wooded area of the city for an armed man who has threatened to harm himself.

Amesbury Police received a 911 call late Wednesday morning from an individual claiming to have a firearm. Police are actively searching for this individual, with the hope that he can be aided by rescuers without harming himself or causing harm to others.

Search groups have concentrated their efforts on the Amesbury Town Forest, off Kimball Road.

While school is no longer in session, employees at the Charles C. Cashman Elementary School and Amesbury High School have been asked to enter safe mode until the situation is resolved. Residents in the area of the Town Forest have been asked to shelter in place at this time.

There is no media availability at this time, but any members of the news media who come to Amesbury are asked to park on Kimball Road at the Rt. 110 (Haverhill Road) intersection.

This is a breaking news update. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
