Burlington Police Host International Association of Financial Crime Investigators Meeting

BURLINGTON — Chief Michael Kent announces the Burlington Police Department hosted a meeting of the New England chapter of the International Association of Financial Crime Investigators (IAFCI) to discuss current issues surrounding elderly financial exploitation.

Detective Gary Redfern, a new member of IAFCI, and Detective Jim Tigges, attended the meeting on Feb. 4 at the Burlington police station. This was the first time Burlington Police hosted the event.

A representative from Fidelity Investments led the discussion on elderly financial exploitation to educate attendees on how to prevent senior fraud and scams in their communities. Additionally, police learned what questions to ask and steps to take if an incident does occur and how to follow up with those affected.

“We have seen an increase in elder scams in our town and throughout the nation,” Chief Kent said. “Whether it’s IRS scams, tax fraud, or lottery scams, no community is immune to these crimes. Through our partnership with IAFCI, Detective Redfern will be able to gain valuable skills that will assist our department in preventing and responding to these incidents.”

The IAFCI is a nonprofit international organization that provides services and an environment where information about financial fraud, fraud investigation and fraud prevention methods can be collected, exchanged and taught for the common good of the financial payment industry and our global society.
