Statement of Stockbridge Police Chief Robert M. Eaton Jr.

“I am honored to have served the community of Stockbridge and its residents, and I am grateful for the two years that I have spent here.

“At this time I am announcing that I have been offered the role of Chief of Police for the community of Townsend in Middlesex County. While the process is still not complete, and details have to be worked out, it does appear that I will be accepting the offer.

“I understand that word of my candidacy for this position may have made its way to the media before I was prepared, and while I am excited and motivated for this new challenge in my career, I will be leaving Stockbridge on the best of terms. I could not be more appreciative of the support I have enjoyed here during my career. This is simply a new opportunity for me to advance my career and pass the torch to the next leader of the Stockbridge Police Department.

“I want to specifically thank and acknowledge Stockbridge Town Administrator Jorja-Ann Marsden, the Board of Selectmen and former Selectman Deb McMenamy for their support, honesty, and professionalism throughout this process. Their loyalty and dedication to the Town of Stockbridge and its residents has been tremendous and it has been an honor to work alongside of them as the chief of police.

“I would also like to thank the men and women of the Stockbridge Police Department. Our residents, business owners, and visitors are safer and more secure than ever thanks to your dedication, integrity, professionalism, and your commitment to each other and your community. I feel comfortable moving on in my career knowing that you all will continue to exemplify the highest standards in municipal law enforcement.

“I would also like to thank all of the Berkshire County Chiefs of Police and the Berkshire County Sheriff’s Department for making me feel welcome and for supporting me through this transition to Massachusetts and to Berkshire County from Rhode Island.

“I am looking forward to this new challenge and opportunity in Townsend.”
