Newburyport Police Department Receives Life Matters Award
NEWBURYPORT — City Marshal Mark Murray is pleased to announce that the Newburyport Police Department were one of 10 Massachusetts police departments to receive the Life Matters Award from American Training at an awards gala at the Andover Country Club on Friday, Oct. 23.
American Training provides workforce development, day habilitation, education, and specialized housing plans to help those who are unemployed, under-employed, at risk, people with disabilities, as well as those with limited marketable or language skills. The Newburyport Police Department was recognized for making a difference in the lives of residents who live in Newburyport’s specialized residential homes that support them in greater independence and a more meaningful life.
“I am so proud of the department for receiving this award and being recognized for their outstanding work with American Training residents,” City Marshal Murray said. “Too often, there is negativity that surrounds police work and it is refreshing to hear about something so positive, that makes such a difference in the lives of others.”
Newburyport Police have brought a calming presence to potentially upsetting episodes among residents at American Training facilities, provided an escort to emergency rooms, and simply stopped by for a friendly visit to say hello, among other caring gestures that have made a difference in the lives of these residents.
Inspector Mike Sugrue and Sergeant Howard Adams attended the gala to accept the award on behalf of the Newburyport Police Department.
