Littleton Police Complete Specialized Training on Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care

LITTLETON — Chief Matthew King announces that all Patrolmen and Communications Officers of the Littleton Police Department completed a ComForCare training at the Littleton Police Headquarters on Thursday.

The one-day course, put on for free by ComForCare Home Care, is designed to provide officers with additional knowledge and skills to handle and respond to calls dealing with people with Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Officers who participated in the training learned about basic tips regarding Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients and how to properly respond to various situations. Topics covered included effective communication tools, techniques for questioning, wandering and elopement, hoarding due to dementia, driving with dementia, the misuse of 911, and other challenging situations that may arise with Alzheimer’s or Dementia patients.

Participants also learned they shouldn’t dismiss younger people in the community, as dementia is becoming more prevalent in younger age groups.

“It is so important to continually reinforce these skills with our team here,” Chief King said. “We have seen an increase in the number of calls involving dementia patients, so this training was helpful.”
