Fellow residents,

Recently, I had some friendly and productive discussions with officials from Townsend, who will soon begin the difficult and laborious process of finding a replacement for their longtime police chief, Erving Marshall.

I agreed to assist Townsend in my own time, by taking on some of the administrative and leadership tasks that require a chief. In this interim role, I would have been paid part of the salary, and a portion would have been paid to Boxborough to reimburse the town for my mindshare.

For several reasons, including the necessity to fill the Interim Chief’s position immediately, this idea has since been abandoned.

I understood from the onset that taking on a second leadership role would be a test and that I would have to carefully balance my time. However, I was confident in my abilities and saw this as an opportunity as a chance to grow as a leader and take on a new challenge while remaining loyal to my hometown. I am always trying to improve myself as a person and a police officer. I take on extra assignments, I am continuing my education, and I take on innovative new programs like restorative justice and regionalization of services.

People who know me — and I’ve met nearly every family in Boxborough — know that my intentions were pure. I appreciate the support of those who backed this idea, and I appreciate the feedback of those who were against it.

What I don’t want to be doubted is that I always have the best of intentions and that Boxborough is and has always been my priority. It has been since I was first appointed a special officer in 1996. Boxborough is where my head and heart is.
