Maynard Police Participate in Legal Updates Training

MAYNARD — Committed to staying informed about changes to laws and updates in current criminal procedures, the Maynard Police Department recently dispatched an officer to complete Law Enforcement Liability In-service Training, held on April 16 at the Acton Police Department.

The Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association (MIIA), Maynard’s property and casualty insurance provider, conducted the full-day training session free of charge for a total of 44 officers from 15 different municipalities. The training served not to only educate the participating officers, but also to help minimize potential liability issues and save money on municipal insurance premiums.

“Laws constantly change, and it is extremely important that our officers have the most current information available to them as they go about their duties,” Maynard Police Chief Mark W. Dubois said. “Training like this, provided at no cost, is invaluable, and the Maynard Police Department is very grateful for it!”

The interactive course covered the latest developments in motor vehicle and criminal law and helped clarify the often complicated jurisdictional procedures faced by officers in their day-to-day jobs. Participants learned how to best address vehicle stops and Operating under the Influence (OUI), and handle exit orders and frisks. They discussed developments related to firearms regulations and medical marijuana, as well as cell phones and recording police. Participants examined procedural updates for domestic violence, children requiring assistance, and field interrogation. All attendees received a reference manual covering a range of issues, including the topics covered during the in-person training and more.

“The Town of Maynard and the Maynard Police Department strive to provide our residents and business owners with a modern, efficient system of government, and it today’s ever-changing legal landscape, it always pays to keep current,” said Kevin Sweet, Maynard Town
Administrator. “I am grateful to the MIIA for making this valuable resource available at no cost to taxpayers.”

John Scheft – founder of Law Enforcement Dimensions, LLC and author of widely-used manuals on motor vehicle law, criminal law and juvenile issues – conducted the training. Upon completion of this and other MIIA risk- and loss-prevention programs, participating municipalities are eligible to receive insurance premium credits through the MIIA Rewards Programs, reducing costs of property and casualty insurance.

About MIIA:
MIIA is the non-profit, member-based insurance arm of the Massachusetts Municipal Association (MMA) insuring nearly 400 cities, towns, and other public entities in the state. In fiscal year 2014, MIIA awarded over $2.3 million of premium credit collectively to the membership through its Rewards program for a 12-year total of $22.1 million. For more information please visit www.emiia.org and www.mma.org.
