Dunstable Police Department Sponsors Rape Aggression Defense Course

DUNSTABLE — Police Chief James G. Downes III reports that the Dunstable Police Department sponsored a Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) class recently, a free course that teaches people about personal safety and self-defense.

“We are proud to be able to continue to sponsor this course for the Dunstable community,” Chief Downes said. “R.A.D. is an extremely useful resource in preventing sex crimes and violence against women.  While we hope they will never have to use the techniques from this course, we are glad those who completed training are well-equipped with valuable self-defense tactics to keep themselves and others safe.”

The Dunstable Police Department has been offering R.A.D. programs to the public since June 2014.  The most recent class was held every Sunday in March, concluding with a final simulation night on March 20 at the Swallow Union Elementary School in Dunstable.  The class was taught by Lt. James Dow and Officer Charlie Chaprales of the Dunstable Police Department.  Detective Cory Waite of the Groton Police Department provided assistance at simulation night, along with Alison Faulhaber and Brendan Riley of Lowell General Hospital.

Five women participated in the class this past month, and can now return to attend any R.A.D. class in the United States and Canada to continue learning or to brush up on the course.

R.A.D. is a self-defense education program available to women, children, men, and seniors that teaches techniques to stay out of danger and how to protect yourself in the event of an attack.  The course begins with instruction on prevention and risk reduction and avoidance, and concludes with a simulation class where students can safely practice the tactics learned during the program.  During this hands-on training, officers outfitted in protective suits conduct simulated assaults on students who are also equipped with safety gear in order to create an environment that is safe, yet as realistic as possible.

Systems is to establish an accessible, constantly improving and internationally respected alliance of dedicated Instructors.  These Instructors in turn, will provide educational opportunities for women, children, men, and seniors to create a safer future for themselves.  In doing this, we challenge society to evolve into an existence where violence is not an acceptable part of daily life.
